Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for 4th and 5th grade students in the Urbana School District.  All reading levels and types of learners are welcome!  Each year a list of 23-30 books is created including Monarch, Newberry, Bluestem, and Rebecca Caudill award books.  Students form one team or several teams depending on the number of participants and work together to read all 23 books.  At the end of the year, there is a school battle where students answer quiz bowl type questions about the books.  The winning school team will go to the Big Battle against Wiley, Yankee Ridge, and Leal where the district winner brings home a trophy!

Participating students will meet once a month during the lunch period to organize, discuss the books, and practice battle questions.  This program is run by parent volunteers and supported by Ms. Morgan, our librarian, and the PTA.  Participating students receive a Battle of the Books t-shirt. Students will be able to check out books from the Thomas Paine library, the Urbana Free Library, the Champaign Public Library, and through the MediaMall online.  Audiobooks and ebooks are also available through the city libraries.  Information about the program will go home with students in the fall and parent permission is required to participate- no fee is required.
